You decide what to decide

Brain fag – prolonged mental fatigue or in relative terms too much required brain power for the mundane.  Think of an average day and the multitude of decisions you make without even realizing it until you are fed up, annoyed and looking forward to your glass of wine.  What time to get up, what to wear, what to eat, how to get to work, what tasks to tackle first, what time to leave in order to arrive on time, what needs to be prepared for tomorrow, what time to go to bed etc.  Writing that list was exhausting.  It’s no surprise that we are all experiencing brain fag.  The surprise is though, that it can be contained.  You decide what to decide.

Fun fact – busy people like President Obama restrict the number of mundane decisions they make in a day in order to further their productivity.  Like the president, you can decide what decisions you will expend more or less energy making.

Could paring down the choices in your wardrobe relieve some of the early morning, ‘what should I wear’ stress?  Be reasonable, your life is not a fashion show.  As long as washing your clothes is a habit then you should be good.  This applies to shoes, handbags and jewellery.

What to eat – regardless of food allergies or specific dietary needs, choose 5 meals that you can always have the ingredients for in your pantry.  Having a healthy meal within arm’s reach will help feed your brain properly so you are actually able to make better, maybe more important decisions.  Limiting your general meal intake choices will make grocery shopping and deciding what to make for dinner a much less daunting task.

Now for the more random categories – cars, bikes, dishes, toiletries, furniture, holidays, activities, commitments.  Where do you want to be more effective in your decision making?  The less the better.

Listen to your brain gut

What is brain gut?  It’s a term used to encompass the common sense that is inherently present and alive in our brains but which a large slice of the population chooses to suppress.

We are all familiar with the term ‘gut feeling’.  When in doubt, what does your gut tell you?  In the same way, before you ask the most basic and obvious question, pause and listen to your brain gut.  Odds are you will reduce your need to ask for assistance and cease being the annoying voice that seems ever present.

Interesting experiment.  Try it and see if your confidence and self esteem benefit simultaneously.

As with all things new it will be uncomfortable at the outset.  Many tests and boundaries are only established and respected through trial and error.  Same principle.  Your brain power is as level as anyone else’s so exercise it, test it, strengthen it.  It is within you, use it.

The dying art of Common Sense...

I’m crying.  I actively miss common sense.  Dramatics aside this is a true statement.  The attribute that many take for granted as an innate possession we are born with is rapidly on the decline.

From not being able to make change to getting hit by a car while playing Pokemon Go there is an issue we must acknowledge.

I despair that this is the new socially accepted norm.  What is to blame for this decay of our mental prowess?  Some theories present themselves but they are only theories.  I’m hoping that by addressing the situation we may begin to see the value in preserving this dying art of being able to listen to our brain gut and devise a strategy to keep it from becoming extinct.

Do you want this acumen to be something that you orally pass on to the next generation as some long ago folklore?

Possible theories:

Laziness – Could be that it’s just easier to feign ineptitude and wait for someone else to make the next move.
If that is your M.O. it’s your choice but your laziness will know no bounds and you will reap the consequences further down the line.  Laziness will become your go to bar level and therefore you will not enjoy the fulfillment that is readily possible.

Lack of I.Q. – A possibility but I’m not sure it’s a true factor.  Even those of us with a regular or lacking I.Q. have many natural sensors that cannot be denied and can be honed if identified.

Low expectations – The truth I fear lies within this explanation (for the vast majority).  Dumb it down – the prevailing motto since the mid 90’s.  Are we truly better off?  Feel good, no expectations, no disappointments.  Not true – the struggle is real.  Few actually reach the bar but the lower it is held the lower the actual attainment.  That is not good for anyone.

Integrity, self respect, work ethic – these have all gone by the wayside in favour of feel good, follow your heart, why should I attitudes.  Take a soul check.  Is this the best you can do?  If your answer is a cocky yes then I beg to differ.
